Very excited to announce we have chilli germination! 21 have come through along with 6 lemon drops. None of the dark ones but some of the larger yellow, medium yellow with red tinge, medium yellow, smaller yellow a few tiny yellow and medium orange. Hope you are impressed with the technical descriptions there! Have moved them to the windowsill and need to get gowing with ordering that grow light.

Rocotos seem tricky to germinate, hmm?

Nothing more from my first sowing, so 5 out of 10, plus 2 more from my second sowing. The rest that didn't germinate I've fished out of the potting mix and now trying the moist-paper-in-plastic-bag method.

I've sown two lots of rocoto seeds (not from your mystery parcels, obvs) this year and only got one germinated out of all of them. Last year though I think I got reasonable germination from three different rocoto varieties. I think maybe the black shells are harder than white/yellow ones so need more soaking?

Anyone else got a pale seedling? Usually I'd associate this with overwatering or nutrient deficiency, but all the others look fine. Perhaps it's just a pale leaved chilli plant?

Not doing at all well this year - Less than half of the seeds have germinated. Also having problems with seed head falling off.

The seed germinates. It gets to the point where you expect the leaves to force off the seed casing, but the seed casing and leaves drop off..

Have a couple like that just now. Strange

Had the same problem with seed cases not coming off, but not with these mystery seeds. With one aubergine I just reburied the seedling with potting mix and it forced its way back up and out of its seed case. If that doesn't work I've had success with misting the stuck seed case so you get a drop of water stuck to it, repeating until the seed case softens and then very carefully removing with tweezers. Still manage to damage the odd cotyledon on really stubborn ones, though.

Last year I didn't have any issues, perhaps because I soaked seeds before sowing.

I've not noticed any pale seedlings. I'll have another look later when I give everyone a drink.

I try to help the seed husk off, when I get seedlings like that. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I've turned off the propagator. None have appeared over the last few days. Plus I think the 70 or so extra chillies is enough of a challenge. All I have to do now is start trying to ID them as they grow!
