I grew parmex carrots last year, starting in a propagator, and they went on growing indoors nicely and rather quickly and were rather tasty (if a little deformed!)

I once tried growing carrots in a plant trough (admittedly not indoors).

One of the problems I found was that because carrots need a free draining compost.......I was forever watering it.

Didn't manage to complete the experiment cos the carrot fly got them all!

    Thank heavens for enviromesh!

Well, carrots that I planted in the trough are in the greenhouse and are growing really well at the moment. Looks like the dog may get a treat after all Our Billy loves carrots.

Let you know how they turn out. Our ones will be sown in a raised bed.

Accidently grew some carrots (Early Nantes, I think) in a pot with some freesia, not sure how though! They were fab, possibly better than those in the plot!

I have carrots sown in a tub in the greenhouse. I spose when it gets warmer I can put them out in the garden and free up some space?

    Hey,
Last year I did some carrots in a wide trough, they did really well! But you've got to make sure you feed them with fertilizer to make sure you get decent sized carrots. Mine were a decent size and really tasty! I did early Nantes 5.

Providing that the container is deep enough, for the type of carrot being grown, they grow really well. Another advantage is that you can make sure there are no stones in the mix ans so reduce the risk of the carrots forking.

mine are in tall newspaper tubes, 2 types, 'Early nantes 5' and 'Ideal', which are a patio 'type' so idea for tubs.
the point of the tubes is a soon as the tap root reaches the bottom, the paper gets torn off at the bottom, and the 'tubes are dropped straight into a hole made in the ground, make transplanting and spacing simple, and the free draining compost surrounds the carrot. The tubes are a good 7 inches tall.

my ideals were up in 9 days and are looking good at 12 days old, the nantes just starting to come through now at 5 days
