  • Whats best time to fire up greenhouse

    I have had a 6' x 8' green house for many years.
I also have a large heated propogator that covers half of the length of the 8' bench. It's a home built air cable heating system. It's worked for must be 15 years or more now.
I usually install this at the start of spring and remove at the start of summer when things are all sorted. Not having soil or sand it's quite light.

I think I am always too early setting things up.
I see people are eager to get started on chillies etc. But my question is ..
Are you better starting later and saving lots of effort and heating.
For the really early stuff just buy ready grown seedlings.
Concentrate on toms etc which can go in later in the year.

I start heating my tiny greenhouse (6'x4') about March, having sown seeds in mid Feb. The big greenhouse (6'x12') won't get the heating til April, that way one bottle of gas should be enough til the frosts are over & night temps stable. It worked last year, apart from me sowing too many toms and the little greenhouse getting a bit crammed
