Watering In Greenhouse?

    Watering In Greenhouse?

    Just back from inspection of produce in GH, and it feels very damp in there.
    I have lots of tom plants, cucumbers, chilli plants, salad leaves, carrots, broad beans, herbs, ornamental plants in there.
    (Potatoes in bags have been hoicked outside for over a week now)

    Should I still water where compost feels dryish?
    Or should I leave everything until it's not as 'damp' feeling in there...?

    I have been leaving the side louvres open overnight for ventilation and the top vents are auto, so they open when necessary. Also have been leaving doors open during the day.

    Some of the foliage has 'drops' of water on - and it's not my doing where I've previously watered ....

    Concerned re botritis .... etc

    Where it's dryish, do you find moisture under the surface? if so the plants are wet enough and can reach for water easily. Otherwise a little appropriate water selectivly might not hurt, but remember the roots are spreading under the surface and may well be in enoigh moisture already.

      Hmm, I'll poke a finger in to the compost to test then ESBKevin - and not water if it feels fairly damp ....

        The droplets of water are probably condensation. I would ease up on watering a little and dee if that helps.

          Yup, just been back out and felt all pots/beds etc and they're moist enough for now - so no watering in there today: don't want to kill them with kindness..!!

            At this time of year, it should be possible to leave the doors, vents & windows open 24 hrs. This should help reduce the condensation.

              The drops of water are probably caused by Guttation. Because the nights are quite cool at the moment, the leaves are not evaporating as much water as the roots are forcing up the plant. The only time this is a problem is if the mineral content in the soil is high (e.g. if you're overfeeding) when the minerals will be concentrated in the drops of water on the leaves and could damage them. However, I've never seen it happen in my plants.

                  No it shouldn't be...I have doors open in my greenhouses for a couple of weeks now....

                    Are your plants in the borders or pots? If they are in the borders I find it best to sink several bottles into the ground and water into them.

                        Everything's in grow bag/pots, Scarlet so your method not really an option - there isn't room in the grow bags to sink a bottle in there.

                          Mine GH doors/windows have all been open for a couple of weeks now, lowest night time temp recorded was 10'C.

                          Condensation can be a real problem with all this rain about.
