  • Watering Greenhouse Tomatoes with Rainwater - Blight?

I have recently moved and am finally able to get a small greenhouse, which is on order and arriving March. I grew tomatoes successfully outside for years in my garden, then blight hit and although i tried blight resistant varieties I didnt have much success. In Grow your Own magazine for February it says blight is carried in rainwater but I have also read you should harvest rainwater to water your crops in the greenhouse. Wont the harvested rainwater give my greenhouse tomatoes blight? or does the virus die when in a water butt I also use rainwater to water new potatoes in tubs Excuse my ignorance but I love new potatoes and tomatoes and I really do not want to introduce blight into my greenhouse. Thank you, Alison

Blight can only live on living tissue, so i would say No, there is no threat from my understanding.
Blight spores are carried by the wind and can attatch themselves to the tom/potato plant if they are wet, so rain does help blight but does not carry it as such.

Oh thank you, that relieves my mind and makes perfect sense. I always thought they were carried in the air it was the magazine saying they spread with rainwater that threw me. I cant wait to get started, weather is so cold here now!

I always water my GH toms with rainwater - so sleep easy.

I prefer to use rain water for all my crops if I can rather than using mains water.
