  • Teeny-weeny white insects?

I've got some teeny-weeny white insects on my peppers and chillies in the greenhouse. Can't see any sign of any other major infestation.

Any ideas what they are (or indicative of) and any suggested treatment(s)?

    Thanks.

Thanks. I'm not sure they are. The whatever-they-are don't fly up when disturbed and are minute, not much over a millimetre in length.

I had had a bit of a look around before posting here.

It looks like immature whitefly on your peppers, I get them at this time of year. I wipe the leaves with a cloth and a weak solution of ecover washing up liquid and water. It doesn't harm the plant and stops the flies and aphids from exhausting the plant and stripping it of nutrients.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

Something else worth doing which doesn't take as much effort.

On a day you know it is going to rain, the heavier the better. Move the pots out of your greenhouse and let the rain wash them clean. Spray the underside of the leaves before putting them back in before bed.

The chance of any rain, heavy or not, looks highly unlikely in the East of England. By the time we do get some, they'll be over run. :-)

What do people think of Nematodes as a form of treatment?

                Expensive....

                Nematodes, 2 treatments £11
                Ecover, 1000 treatments £1.65

I'm guessing you don't fancy touching them?

I've never used nematodes as it doesn't seem right to me - like taking rabbits to Australia and them becoming a pest.

I'm also Ecover washing up liquid user it seems to work on most plant bugs.

I think if you have a greenhouse or poly that is a really closed environment and you are growing lots of susceptible plants, close together then the Encarsia formosa are worth getting but without a big whitefly population you risk the whitefly disappearing before the parasites hatch and then they starve. I'm pretty sure I looked at buying them once and the advice was be sure you've got an ongoing infection.

If your greenhouse is healthy and you're not chucking lots of chemicals around something will be along to eat them soon. Even soap spray kills potentially beneficial insects.
