  • How many tomatoes?

I was looking at my tomato plants today, and trying to work out how many I could fit into my 8 by 6 greenhouse. Bearing in mind they will be planted in 12in pots, and I need space for 2 cucumber plants, what are your thoughts on the matter? I can remove all the shelving, so assume all the floor space is available.

Originally I planned on 8, but I have 5 varieties, tigerella (10ish ), sunrise (3), costalou (5,sp?, its a beefsteak I think), pigletwillie's french black (2) and seahorse's green tiger (2). These are the ones that have been in my greenhouse for 2 weeks, but they are not all in their final pots.

I also have 3 more baby sunrise because they are DD's favourite, and she said I hadn't grown enough plants, and 3 green tiger, because I thought the cats had killed the other 2, but they recovered.
Those that do not make it into the hallowed area will have to slum it outside (risk of blight) or be given up for adoption.

Thoughts and opinions welcome , and no I can't fit in another greenhouse or put in another floor
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
    Now a little Shrinking Violet.

hi, i always have same dilema.. my gh was 6x8 and also toms in pots, i normally have 6 on 1 side, 6 on the other with 4 across the back and a cucumber up each door.i grow cherry toms, tigerella and money maker but last year i placed toms in a chessboard fashion to half again the amount i could grow, they didnt crop as usual so wasnt worth cramming them in..
planted 12 outside and got blight due to all the rain in summer so this year i invested in 2 6x6 gh and fir them together tomaximise space (secretley always wanted big gh!!)
ihad also bought tom plastic gh from wilko's for £10 each, they shouldhouse 5 i hope..good luck
    I'll be SLACK!!!

I'm here for a good time, not a long time

I have a 12ft greenhouse and can get 8 plants down each side, plus a couple at the back. I wouldn't put more than 6 down each side in an 8ft, and they'd have to be cordons, not bush types. If you put them too close together, you risk botrytis from not having enough airflow which can be as devestating as blight if it gets a hold
I do have a couple of those mini greenhouses which are tied to the side of the greenhouse and cope with some of the overflow The shelves work well as staging in the early part of the season, then they get shifted outside to do duty later on
