  • How do you attach bubblewrap?

My greenhouse has nothing inside it to attach things to except for three struts, one each side and one at the back, with a groove in them. Desperate to make it warm enough to sow seeds, I have bubblewrapped it up to 1m using parcel tape to hold it in place. Of course a series of damp days will result in the whole lot falling down. We do have occasional damp days here! And of course I shall need to take it down again in a couple of month's time. Any ideas will be most welcome. I can't be the only grape with an old-fashioned greenhouse.

I wouldn't bother. You may make it warmer, but you'll be cutting out (desperately needed) light.

Not good at that, TS! Take your point about the light though.

There is absolutely no problem with light restriction using bubble wrap for extra greenhouse insulation. I have been using it for years to very good effect.

If your greenhouse has glazing bars with grooves in then you can buy plastic clips which you push through the bubble wrap, in to the groove, and then half twist to lock in place. At the gable ends I use corks cut in half lengthways and then slightly tapered. Push the corks in to the gap between the roof section and the gable end and trap the insulation. Works a treat.

Then I stand corrected Gwyndy. There isn't much light round here yet, I'm growing mainly green algae in the greenhouse, and the seedlings on my south window are all getting drawn.

Sorry - perhaps I should have said that I have never had any problems with light restriction. Clean glass helps though!! And make sure that you open the greenhouse door every day when temperature is above 0C so that everything is properly ventilated.

The clips that I use are these from Two Wests - Super Alliplugs

Thanks Gwyndy, I'll get some clips and try them. We get frosts so late in the year up here that a bit of insulation will be a great help. Do you put it right up to the roof? I didn't know whether the bubblewrap affected light values, but light is something we're not short of here except in deepest winter so I'll give it a go.

Thanks for the 'how to', TS. Unfortunately it's for wooden greenhouses. Are there any of those left?
As I anticipated the bubblewrap fell down this morning except where it was pinned in place by staging! Ah me! Just have to get some of those plugs.

Yes, but have a read through the comments under the how-to ....

Yes, but there will be a gap between the glass and the bubble wrap and it will sag. Couple of photos showing the clip and the cork wedge.
