  • First polytunnel winter ....

...... should we be leaving the door open for ventilation? Not much growing in there at the moment, but would hate to somehow contaminate the soil / environment.

The doors and windows of my greenhouse are very much closed on a day to day basis at the moment but I do open them when it's sunny for a few hours to make sure that it doesn't become airless in there.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

We have mesh over the holes at each end of our polytunnel, which we leave uncovered at this time of year in order to keep the tunnel fresh.
We only have winter cabbage and some sleeping strawberries in at the moment and keeping the tunnel closed will not affect the lower temperatures much; not only that, freezing clear skies would allow the temperature to skyrocket during a sunny day only to freeze again at night. A plants idea of hell

Keeping closed up all winter will increase the chances of botrytis and mildew getting hold, open it up every now and then to get the air circulation. If theres nothing in it and there is no wind forecast, it may as well stay open.
