  • Cool Down A Greenhouse

Are there any tricks to help cool down a greenhouse? This year I bought a digital sensor thermometer and the temperature display monitor is in the kitchen. So everytime I go in the kitchen I can see the temperature in the greenhouse. It reached 106F today. I have the greenhouse window and door open so how can I cool it down?

Keep damping down the floor at the hottest time of day. I hosed mine three times today and it really works. Failing that paint the glass with a whiote wash. I also put bamboo matting on the roof on the outside. Just throw it over half on either side so it wont blow away. I find them quite effective and inexpensive. Good luck.

White wash is great if its sunny but blocks too much light if its mediocre weather. Brambles idea is good as you can remove it when its not so sunny. I picked up some net curtains from a charity shop to do the same job and again they work well. I have gravel paths in both my greenhouses and tunnel and hosing them down really does bring the temperature down as well as increasing humidity.

        cooling down

bramble - thanks for your advice re putting "windowlene" on the greenhouse windows - i wasnt sure if that would work - did try a bit of fleecing over greenhouse roof the other day - trouble was the weather changed for the worse and blew it off! good idea re bamboo thingy - will give it a try - sounds good to me, especially if the weather does decide to behave itself once again! dexterdog in lancashire in the pouring rain (yet again!)

Hi Dexterdoginlancashire, glad to be of help, however i did'nt mean for you to put windowlene on the glass but a waterbased white 'wash'. However if the windowlene is working for you thats all that matters.
Good luck. Bramble in cold wet Dublin.

Hello Lesley, When the greenhouse temperature has soared damping down the floor really does work. It knocks down the temperature and humid high temps are less damaging to plants than dry high temps. To prevent the temps soaring to these levels you need to put some "blinds" outside the greenhouse. Old net curtains on wires or strings on the sunny side are ideal. Then you can open or close them as required. Hope this helps.

You dont need to do all the greenhouse remember ddl. Just the south facing side so you won't loose so much light then. Also I leave the bubble insulation up as this diffuses the light a bit & that helps. If your greenhouse is at home try runnung a fan in there as it will help equalise the temperature and avoid hot & cool spots.
