  • Cold frame position

Was looking for some advice about where to put a cold frame. My husband is going to build me one or two from wood and greenhouse glass. My garden runs east to west I think. I could put them beside the house which gets sun early morning but shade from late morning. It would be sheltered. Alt is beside my greenhouse at the bottom of the garden. It gets lots of sun all afternoon and into the evening. My greenhouse can get very hot - was 40 degrees yesterday even with windows, vents and door open. Bit worried that the cold frame might be too hot there. Any advice ?

Depends really on what you mainly intend to use it for :-
    a) growing melons/cucumber etc = max sun
    b) hardening off veg etc = sun/shade mix
    c) taking cuttings = full shade, but with light from side

possibly building two if you intend to do different things with them would give you some options - bear in mind wind forces on the top and the need for ventilation when designing them.

On the whole I'd say bottomless ones which can be moved at a pinch give you more flexibility.

Thanks think two different places is a good idea. Largely hardening off I think. Never had one before just worked between house and greenhouse.

Sounds like a plan - you might want to consider using the frames for salad stuff like lettuce, spring onions etc too - makes it a bit easier to deal with slug problems and stops them getting splashed by dirt when it rains if nothing-else.

        Enjoy your gardening :-)
