    Bug Hotel in a Greenhouse

    I was thinking it might be good to put a small bug hotel up in the greenhouse but am wondering if it might be a bad idea rather than good.

    What does anyone think on this?

    You might find it's the perfect place for red spider mite to overwinter. Better perhaps to find somewhere outside.

      I’ve got big hotels in my tunnel and find the number of beneficial insects are greater than without them. Red spider mite, well I only seem to get them when I grow Aubergines so don’t grow them any more.

        I've got one hanging in my polytunnel. Only flying bugs can get to it. As there isn't a wall for it hang it on.
        It's only in there because I release ladybird larvae as pest control, it's somewhere for the adults if they want to use it. They didn't last year.

          yeh I think the hanging one will be a good idea, especially if you get ladybirds and maybe lacewings overwintering in there, In fact I think I am going to get a couple for my greenhouse

            Mine are very rudimentary, half a kitchen roll tube stuffed with straw and hollow sticks hung from the central pole.

                  don't the bugs cook inside? Even with decent ventilation my poly gets up to 40 degrees

                      I agree I think it's to hot, so nothing uses it.
                      Mine is there for the ladybirds if they wanted somewhere to hibernate ( none made it if they did try hibernating in the tunnel ). I've never actually seen anything using it. Apart from spiders just using it as another anchor point for their web building .
                      To be honest I never saw anything use it when it was outside either.

                        my bug house that I have on an east facing wall outside was inundated with solitary bees a few weeks ago, they where queuing up, I've never seen so many, most of the bamboo sticks have been filled up this year

                        if I have a bug house in the greenhouse it will be later in the year, late September i'sh i think, when everything starts winding down
