  • Shelves drainage holes

I've just purchased these two sets of outdoor shelves to go alongside my garage so I can keep a few of my seed trays out of the way.

It occured to me though that where the metal verticle poles fitted into to plastic connectors they were probably going to be sitting in a small reservoir of water continuously seeing as the shelves are constantly exposed to the elements, therefore the ends of the poles could get rusty pretty quickly. I decided therefore to drill a 5mm hole in the bottom of each of the slots so hopefully the water will drain away PDQ and the poles will last a few years longer than they would have otherwise.

I've found that the poles last fine. The plastic connectors seem to degrade in sunlight though and get very brittle. They seem to give up the ghost long before the connecting rods and shelves.

I inherited some similar shelves when I got my allotment that were part of one of those polythene/flyaway type greenhouses/coldframes and quite a few of the tubes had rusted ends but the plastic bits were fine.

Hmm, well I have just picked up some gardening stuff through Freecycle which included the metal shelves but no rods or plastic connectors.

        Perhaps we should get together
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.
