If you plonk them in the composter, then you will be making compost! They'll soon heat up and start to break down, though they'll take a long time. But the resulting woody compost makes a good mulch.

I had a similar thing a little while ago when the electric company pruned some trees back from overhead cables and left me with a pile of wood chips. I filled one of the 1 ton builders' bags with them and dragged it to a shady corner of the garden. It took about 2 years to breakdown to the point where I could use it to mix in with other compost for growing plants in.

Just had ours done an de got loads of branched as well as larger logs. Large ones are dried out for burning in about 2 years and I an slowly working my way through the smaller branched with the shredder and they go straight on to the flower beds as mulch. Done it before with no ill effects.
