It's not just tins that are being saved. After pickling beetroots in all manner of different saved jars in 2017, we decided that as we have Doritos and dip on a semi-regular basis that all the different various sized jars would go and that we would save the Doritos dip jars, because they have a nice wide neck, and all the lids will fit each other. Even the Tesco Own brand is the same jar and lid.

Are the lids vinegar proof? If not use a cellophane jam skin underneath, put on as you do for jam, or the vinegar fumes will rot out the lids

They've had tomato salas in which I assume is reasonably acidic too - I always check the lids before use.

I was saving those huge mayonaise jars but discovered they take a 400g packet of chilli powder so have used some for spices.

I save jam jars for jam, surprisingly lol, my daughter saves me the Salsa jars for chutney and the huge mayo jars for Giardiniera.
I agree the lids do need checking carefully though, cos even a small hole in the plastic coating makes them rust very quickly - not nice eugh!

I get through a lot of cashew butter (I take cashew butter and banana crispbread "sandwiches" to work most days) and the little jars, with new lids, make perfect 1/2lb honey jars.

          Endless wonder.

We use a lot of Hellmann's mayonaise. It is packed in a plastic jar with a plastic lid that hold 424g of mayonaise. The cleaned jars make excellent storage containers for dried beans, pearl barley, sweet red pepper, cinnamon etc. I also use them for storing in-line drippers and other irrigation fittings.
