  • free containers

I am growing everything in containers as I have moved house and will ultimately have to re-make the entire garden. My local fruit and veg shop sells broccoli which arrives in polystyrene boxes. These boxes make great containers for growing things. For a start they are FREE. They are rectangular which means they can fit neatly side by side without wasting space like round containers. Being natural insulators they help over wintered plants. They come with a lid which you can break up to fill the bottom to assist drainage. And they are easy to drill drainage holes in the bottom.

I have also got some dustbins to grow things like rhubarb and fruit bushes and other plants which like a lot of root room or can be invasive. The builder left behind a couple of plastic dustbins, and I know a junk shop where I can buy galvanised bins for a fiver. Zinc baths ( the oval ones with handles) are £15 each which is a bit pricey so if you see one cheap snap it up.

I am wondering if I should paint the insides of the galvanised bins with something to prolong their lives. I can just see a whole row of bins with apple trees and blueberries. Has anyone any suggestions as to what I should paint the inside of the metal bins please?

I have also found some tall narrow galvanised containers which florists used for cut flowers before the advent of plastic - they make decorative holders for trailing plants or herbs, or bush beans and peas use your imagination.

No the galvanisation is the water proofer. If you want to paint it you will need a spray etch primer then a suitable top coat (Satin Black).
