  • Cabbage root fly

    Hi there

I am very new to this so pls excuse any bloopers - i have just had to remove a poorly cabbage will wilting outer leaves and when i examined the base i found something that looked like rusty rotting. I guessed that this was the cabbage root fly. Will this go on to affect my other cabbages and is it too late to put collars around them.

    any advice is appreciated

If the fly has laid some eggs, she will have laid lots. I reckon you'll find more damage to other plants. Sow some more in modules to start them off, and use collars when you plant out this time.

If it's cabbage root fly you will usually, but not always, find small maggots on the stem?

Yes, you will see the maggots - the rusty rotting you describe could well be the result of their chewings, but all over-watering and wind-rock damage.
