  • Growing Turmeric?

I've been given a bit of turmeric root that appears to have a bud on it.... besides treating it like ginger does anyone have any experience growing it?... I'm guessing it isn't hardy so needs to be grown indoors through the winter, GH in spring/autumn and sheltered otherwise......

CC take a look at this link - it has a snapshot of how to grow and what conditions it likes

    PLANT CULTURES - Growing turmeric

If you do a search on turmeric or haldi on GYO website I think you'll find this subject has come up before and you may find some more useful info there as well.

Do report back and let us know how your interesting project turns out.

    Good Luck!

Sounds about right Chris, but not in full sun during the summer, when we get one!

I've had one growing for a few of years, summer and autumn in polytunnel, and then somewhere either frost free for the winter, (leaves die back and restarts from rhyzome in the spring) or in the house, where it keeps growing-usually.

I normally water when compost is drying out and feed when I remember, very easy growing really, few pest and I think it makes a nice plant although not flowered the last couple of years, but hopeful if we get a good year. If it helps I usually boost sprouting by poting up and putting in the airing cupboard til it sprouts, same as ginger or finger root.

I'm not sure if it would be better to try and start it now, keeping it warm and brightly lit or store in just damp compost and start in the spring?

ps Try a search cos i'm sure there was another thread a while back
