  • Deformed Pumpkin Seedling

I decided to germinate a few Atlantic Giant Pumkin seeds for my son and the first came through a few days ago just followed by another and they look a bit umm....

Was the compost perhaps a bit to wet and warm (my fault)? I germinated them in a heated propagator, or, was it faulty seed?

I suspect me...! Think I might need to pop some more in.

    Did you scratch the seed?

No, though I could see why that might help. So you think they simply injured themselves whilst pushing out of the seed shell?

Perhaps I should scratch and soak next ones?

Soak maybe but they should come out fine.
They're only seed leaves anyway though.

After I read your post I did a search of the interwebs and some people go to the lengths of getting fine grade sandpaper on them. I shan't be doing that.

          I'll soak a couple tonight.

          Thank you.

It looks like there's new growth of the first true leaves coming in so I'd reckon it'll recover perfectly well.

Ta. Yes, the first one looks like it should kick on ok, the second however looks a right sorry state. I'll give it a chance - everything gets a chance here.

The one on the left has had it. No idea why. The other one will be fine but will need a bigger pot very soon. Pumpkins grow QUICKLY.

No need to scratch or soak pumpkin seeds either.

The ghost rider baby that I have. Looks the same, I must have fiddled with seed case or something on germinate. Looks a bit odd, but it is getting its first proper leaf. Looks like curly pasta. He'll live.

                        Update on deformed pumpkins

Red arrow is starting location, blue arrow was location a couple of days ago. It is a thug and won't be stopped. Seems to be growing at least 6 inches a day. I have been leaving a marker each morning to monitor it's progress.

The other one which was a real sorry state is slightly to his left and is doing fine - though nothing in comparison to his big brother.
