You are going to have to give us a little more than that to go on. Are they like this after harvesting, or after being in a bag in the shed for a year?

As Zaz says, we ned a bit more info before we can offwer you any advice. I have had a poor year for shallots too - they all started growing really well but for some reasom they seemed to stop and although the foliage stayed green, it didn't seem to get bigger or produce more leaves - I think I have lifted all bar about 12 that still seem to be growing. However, a grower no more than 5 miles away is lifting the biggest shallots he has ever grown - and his are still putting on weight.

My shallots haven't split into many this year, some are only doubles but big ones and the garlic has been poor. P'haps it's just a weather thing.

That may explain why my garlic is also poor this year

Had a bumper year for shallots. Normally like them for pickling but they are so big that I would not be able to get them in a jar, as big as onions and wow ... strong. No problem really as I am an onion fan.

face 3 bulbs away from you, and plait like a hair plait, adding another one in everytime or every other time you cross over.

no idea, I just found that the easiest way. Take from the bottom then, not from the top obviously
It's not 'proper' doing it that way though.

oops, thought you were talking about garlic or shallots. Not sure if it works the same way with onions, my preferred method is tie them to a piece of butchers string....will look for something a min, hang on....

Mine were small last year, but am going to try some special onion fertiliser this time to see if it makes a difference.
