  • Flowering Onions.

Probably due to the very dry weather, my overwintered red onions are showing signs of flowering. Should I remove the flower buds?

Sorry - didn't see this thread - I always pick them off - but the onion is never the same. They turn into early harvested onions and get cooked with / chopped and frozen without drying and storing. You will need to chuck out the stem bit in the middle.

At a guess I think the answer is remove them or the onion will put all its energy into producing the flower & then the seed rather than swelling the bulb, but it is a guess & quite possibly wrong

You can, but pick them as soon as you think they are big enough and use pronto - they won't store and if you forget which is which later, you find that you lose a load as they rot. Maybe tie a bit of twine round the ones that you have taken the flower off.

I never have any joy with red onions from sets so have stopped bothering as they ALWAYS go to seed for me!............Whereas seed sown red onions I have no problems with!
