Has anyone ever tried to grow chinese tree peonies from seed? I have bought some seed but am wondering whether I have bitten off more than I can chew!

First of all, the hybrid Chinese tree peonies will not come true from seed, The species, like P. ludlowii do. They need to be sown in September/Oct for best results. they need to be left outside in a protected place but at the mercy of the weather as they need a period of cold to break germination. Failing that sow them now and hope for some frost. OR. Soak them for 24 hours in warm slightly soapy water, then sow in a plastic bag in damp vermiculite or perlite. Seal the bag and place in the salad part of the fridge. (They do not need to be frozen only kept at 40f). Leave there until March, then resow in compost in gentle heat. Even then they can take up to 5 years before they germinate. Have fun!
