  • Caterpillars eating cherries

I thought I'd try some of my cherries to see how sweet they were, though they aren't black yet. To my horror I realised that the clusters of lucious looking cherries were 'glued' together, with a largish green caterpillar muching away at several fruit at once. A good number are affected, the first time I've seen it.
A Google search was pretty inconclusive, except to tell me that cherry growers in Kent can't be totally organic because of the need to spray in spring against caterpillars, which will eat the fruit later in the season. It didn't tell me what the caterpillars are, or what to spray with. I try not to use sprays, but OH says he'd rather me spray than lose a whole year's crop of cherries We only have one fan trained tree, so each fruit is precious.
    Any ideas?

I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
    Now a little Shrinking Violet.
