    Has anyone tried these?
When do you pick them??..this year I want to get them before the squirrels do!...they're clearly never going to make it to the brown stage but I don't want to pick them too young and make everyone ill!

You could always net the trees......
I'm not sure that they are anygood (to humans) before they are brown. I'm no expert though - squirrels got ours last year before I even realised that we had any!!

I've eaten soft green hazlenuts - weirdly, Waitrose were selling local ones by the branch a year or so ago. They were very milky, squeaky and delicious.

Try a couple at the beginning of Sept. I usually went nutting as a girl at the end of the summer holidays, the nuts were still green and on the trees. As long as the shells are filled, they are eatable, but it may be best to peel off the skin, as it can give some (not all) people a sore throat, although it doesn't taste bitter like chestnuts do.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
