  • What's the difference between cat food and dog food?

    Just wondered!

I always though that dogs were omnivores (so could live with a veg diet if pushed) and cats are deffo carnivores (can't live without meat).

In terms of 'can my cat eat the dog's food', and 'can my dog eat cat's food', I suspect that a multi-pet household will answer yes - but as to whether this is a good thing or not...........?

I can only suggest that cat food contains dog and vice versa.

Very interesting that cats need taurine (a main ingredient in Red Bull)

I have given the dog cat-food before, but would never give the cats dog-food. Although I didn't know about the Vit A etc., I did know that cats don't have the capacity to digest veg., and most dog food contains some veg or derivatives.

I knew about Cats needing Taurine.

Interestingly, when our Dog was ill with dodgy belly, the Vet said no way must he be allowed to nick the Cat food, as it had far too much protein in.

I have just asked Maisie the cat and she says it is all hers, but only the first few mouthfulls and then she doesn't care who gets it.
                  Mind you I don't have a dog...
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

A bit of contradictory comments in there... cat food shouldn't have too much Vitamin A, but must have some. Dog food tends to have lots of Vitamin A, but they can make their own from beta-Carotene......
Now why, if dogs don't HAVE to have Vit A, is there so much of it in the dogfood?
I knew about the extra protein for cats, and that there was an ingredient cat's HAD to have that tends to only come from meat-based sources (but not the name of it).

When I had cats I used to buy a pigs head and render it down. Combined with porridge oats they were well happy.

Maisie is definitely not impressed with that idea, Brengirl.
I bet you had a big kitchen to deal with that lot in. And the time.

I had a very small kitchen but if needs must you find the time. Sorry it wasn't to your taste Maisie.
