  • Strange concoctions that actually work together.

I just commented on Gillykats peas and raspberries he's just harvested.

It got me thinking of what fruit or veg that you would never dream of as being compatible, yet they seem to work when used together!

Ashamedly I can't think of any off hand..............but i bet you lot can!

celery and peanuts are delicious...not sure if they count as a strange enough concoction though.

Since being on here and hearing various cake recipes, some of them seem normal to me now.

Chocolate and chilli, chocolate and beetroot , courgette and lime cakes.
I'd have raised an eyebrow or two in the distant past ...but they are yummy!

I've just come across a suggestion online that I'll try, "cucumber and strawberry sandwiches". It makes me recall as a child being taken to parents' friends for Sunday tea and the first course at this time of the year would be fresh garden strawberries served with bread and butter...... which struck me then as decidedly odd (though thinking now there's nothing very odd about strawberry jam on bread.....).
Made myself hungry thinking about it, off for a jam sandwich!

Don't have any fresh strawberries just now (midnight) without venturing into garden with torch but do have a glut of cucumbers so tried fresh cucumber slice atop of strawberry jam on bread...... Better than you might imagine, it's not going to win Masterchef but quite acceptable and cucumber adds texture/bite. Best thing about it is it uses up a bit more cucumber....

As kids we always had a platter of fruit at the end of a meal. My mother would cut up apples, pears, oranges etc and the smother them with salt and pepper the tasted delicious. I still eat oranges with salt and freshly ground pepper. We also used "black salt" which smells of rotten eggs on fruit and in fruit juices. It's delicious

Just remembered back to when i was a nipper. We used to have custard and jelly every Sunday on returning from Sunday School, with a mountainous pile of bread and butter in the middle of the table to go with it. Still to this day eat rice pudding with bread and butter.

A slice of cucumber dipped in sugar - one side only is enough.
Always being told it was a good combination, and the teacher that said it (rural studies) was not to be doubted. Being the person he was I would have eaten it even if I knew a long painful death was certain. Turned out he was right, still dip an odd slice ot several these days.

When I was a nipper, a salad was a bowl of ripped up lettuce, some sliced tomatoes and cucumber, sprinkled liberally with sugar
I'd forgotten that until you posted, Kirk. Thanks for the memory
