  • Shark Fin Melon Recipe

I sowed 4 shark fin melons in my plot this year and they have gone beserk even growing out into the adjoining forest smothering brambles or anything that stood in their way. They have plenty of fruit and I have been trawling the net for recipes for "shark fin melon soup", plenty out there all right but require exotic ingredients not readily available where I live.
Has anyone got a basic recipe for them please.

Sorry I've never grown them but where did you get the seeds from?

My nephew who lives in Madeira sent them to me, he usually sends a few "exotics" for me to try since he moved out there. This year it was the shark fin melons( great success) and tree tomatoes ( total failure ).
I am hoping to save some seed, I have a lot of winter squash nearby but I don't think they will cross pollinate, Shark fin melons are a different species (Cucurbidita ficifolia) to other squashes commonly grown in Ireland which are mostly Cucurbidita pepo. However I could be wrong.
Anyways if you or others are interested I'll keep some for sharing out . I sowed four seed and they all grew and are nearly a pest now.

HSL has them, or did last year

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

            Hi
website sowingnewseeds.co.uk has some recipes for your melon. Doesn't seem to have any exotic ingredients for you.

            Hope this is helpful.

Tremendous noviceveggrower, I'll try the soup this weekend , maybe dish it out to the visitors on Sunday (assuming any one turns up). Goji berries may be hard to find in the local shops but I think I'll substitute them with cranberries instead. I have 6 goji berries plants I grew from seed this spring but it will be a couple of years I suspect before I get any fruit.
              much obliged cheers.

I have wondered about just using it in a bog standard chicken or pork broth? As has been previously mentioned some of the 'Proper' ingredients are hard to find.
                  Any more thoughts please?
