  • Pumpkin seeds to eat!

I have split open the big pumpkin, scooped out the seeds and washed them.

The first time I tried to use pumpkin seeds, I just chucked a handful in with some bread I made - they were inedible as you (presumably) have to cook them first.

Second time I tried to use them I roasted them, and they were so solid and burnt, they were inedible.

I'm hoping to avoid a trend here - anyone have any foolproof advice for me?

You have to take them out of their shells first, you just want the green kernel......or you can get pumpkins that have "shell-less" seeds.

I've no idea how the seeds are shelled commercially, any more than I know how they get brazil nuts out of their shells in one piece.

Grow one that produces naked seeds? I had Kakai seeds from Norfolkgrey, and the seeds are large and delicious. (the flesh isn't brilliant - stringy and bleh)

I gently roast them with a bit of salt. Then when they are crisp let them cool and you can cracked them open with your teeth to get to the kernel. If you get it right though they go really crisp and puffy and you can just eat them with the shells on. Yum
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

            Thanks for your suggestions.

I didn't realise that you had to get the green pumpkin seed out of the shell!

I've tried both methods in MH's link (frying them so the hull is crisp and snapping them open, and boiling them so the hull floats off) and neither way is brilliantly successful.

I have a huge tub of seeds and fiddling round with each one individually is coming under the 'life's too short' banner at the mo - but I'll give it a last go with Ancee's roasting method later.

I appreciate you help, peeps - if anyone else has any experience with these, or helpful tips, I'd still be grateful to hear them.

I do the same as Ancee, shells n'all! Probably best roast just when having a beer, it's no problem then to break open if the shells are inedible, it slows down your drinking

Thanks Hazel - I've learnt something new today, I never knew you needed to de-shell them either!

Maybe the cats claws could come in useful?
