  • Wish I Hadn't....

    ......opened our unhatched egg.

We had three unhatched, two eggs were cold but one was surprisingly warm and candling showed it was full of chick. As Morag had taken her five babies out to eat, we decided to bin the two eggs we knew weren't viable and pip the Marans egg.

Bad idea. The chick was alive but had no skull or upper beak. DD has bravely dispatched the poor thing. Felt really bad when it cheeped at us when the air got to it.

I so wish we hadn't looked but I guess it wouldn't have been a slow death as it couldn't pip with no beak.

    Aww Jules, thats a shame.

I was thinking about whether I'd look at any unhatched we get - decided last night that I wouldnt so think Ive made the right decision after your experience.

I'd have also looked- you never know- it might have been a healthy, normal chick and suvived.
I had my first Marans chick half get out of the shell and die. No idea why- I wish i'd have intervened

Thats what my father said Nicos. He's been nominated as 'unhatched egg checker' as Im just a weed when it comes to stuff like that.

After 4 of our 7 hatched I put the rest in a food back and into the wheelie bin but couldn't resist taking them out the next day for one final look for cracks. Luckily, there were none otherwise I don't know what I would have done.
