  • Soft Shells that collapse !!

After many traumatic months with losing 3 hens to different conditions my remaining 2 have really perked up. Only thing is that one is laying very soft and squidgy eggs. She lays it and it squashes straight away! She has recently been wormed. There is lots of gravel ans stones and grit available. Any other ideas ?

A few drops of cod liver oil on the feed pellets and a teaspoon of limestone flour stirred in so it sticks to them. The oil contains Vit. D which help calcium to be absorbed.

As a matter of interest, did all your birds come from the same place, at the same time, or have you acquired them over the years from different places? If they all came together, from one source, my instinct is that you were sold a "dodgy lot" as you have unusually bad luck to lose 3 out of 5 and have another one not laying properly, although appearing well.

I would agree with Flum and add the cod liver oil. I would withdraw any treats for a bit too to make sure she is eating up the pellet ration and therefore getting the proper vitamin/mineral balance.
