  • Right between the eyes....

    Enter Snadge, big game hunter!

Just killed my first rat with an air rifle and I got the sucker RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES!

Rats are starting to get a bit out of hand at the allotment as they move indoors for the winter.
I am using a three pronged attack, traps, poison and shooting the varmints.
Spent part of the day patching holes where they had gnawed through my hut until ther only means of entry was the pophole.
Crouched down in the hut (behind the chooks who were on there 4 foot high roosting bar) and aimed at the pophole. Sure enough, after 10 minutes Roland appears at the pophole, looks left, looks right, looks forward then BANG.......right between the eyes. Stuck another slug in him for good measure as well.
Wing'ed another one which let out a squeel but vanished. By this time it was too dark ro see anything so picked the dead rat up and chucked him behind the coop in case he had eaten any poison and my chooks had a peck at him.
I am not usually a vindictive person but when my chooks food was disappearing at a rate of knots I felt it was time to take action.
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

Well done that grape there! Clearly a good shot, Snadger. Just don't tell the Aussie version of RSPCA (in joke)!

For those of us who have never felt the demand to kill to defend those we love I feel for you Snadger. It cannot be an easy thing to do. But, you did it. Stand tall!! xx

        Well done Snadger!

I've poisoned the one in the compost bin, and those near the house. I daren't do the one that lives under the chook house, but I did bung the hose down there t'other day for 15 minutes - that must've peed 'im off a bit!

I've used Eradibait to get rid of any rats round my chooks, it's safe to use and only kills rodents. Mind you, I've also put down a couple of the baited boxes too! (not that they've been touched so far ). If I could trust myself to make a clean kill, I'd use a rifle as well

                    Respect
Vision of 'up the jungle' type gear and pith helmet with chooks hiding behind the mighty hunter, peering round him with worried expression and rat upright with all legs spread wide and bloodstain on chest (poetic licence) in doorway saying 'its a fair cop gov'
                    Go Snadger.

Doesn't matter if Roland had come through the pophole with a white flag or a piccie of his children held up, I'd still have shot the bugger!

OK, Snadger - now I understand your justifiable pride in taking one of them out. But 2 threads? Now step away from the gun, lad, and get in touch with your feminine side, before you get arrested!

Ah, but thats where you're wrong!

Felt guilty about the first thread so my feminine side took over and I put a respectful thread on about 'Intelligent rats'

PS Just been looking on the net at some hollowpoint pellets though which will really do the business........must be my macho side returning!

PPS And it was three threads actually..........if you have a look in 'what I did today'!

God! Rather you than me, old chap! Don't get me wrong - I'd hate to be dealing what you are dealing with! I tend to set the cats on 'em (has worked so far!)

Nice shooting Snadger. Has to be said, there is a certain sense of satisfaction when making a clean kill. The air rifle really is the ideal tool for the job. Happy hunting in the future.
