  • Potato plants and hens

I want to let the girls out to free-range again now that the digging is all done. I will be fencing off the veggie patch so they can't get to our dinner. However, will they eat the potato tops or are those safe to leave unfenced?

They will definately eat the leaves..... I have a hard time stopping my girls from eating the potato's leaves. Have been advised thay they should not eat the leaves.... saying that, they've not shown any ill effects yet. I have managed to fence off but any leaves poking through the fencing they munch.

Cheers RT - I guess I will have to plan in more fencing before they get out then. I will have to carry on picking grass for them for the time being.

Potato is related to deadly nightshade ( look at the flowers when they come!) so not good for chooks. Mine haven't tried to eat them but they like to dust bath in the furrows after I'd earthed up so exposed the tubers and got loads of green spuds! Fenced off this year!

I found that mine don't eat them but are liable to scratch over them and snap them off
