  • Poor hen

2 days ago a hen layeded her's later than usual,it had blood on it and a bit of poop, and a few spots off blood on the nest beddingno more eggs since,to cut the story short,i looked up on line, pics and video's,not eggbound, but a prolaps, and a very dirty 1 at that,so i can only presume it was my amber link, that layed the egg,her comb is still red,i set my stall out old towels gloves and vaseline, she was so good, had her in warm water for about 20 mins, and tried to clean her best i could, then on the the toweled up draining board, head covered and tended to her, smothered her prolaps and vent in the grease, got it back a few times, but abviously needs to be done regularly,it does go back, then she tries and manages little bits of poop and water, she is currently in the laundary basket on towels covered up in the quietness of the lounge, will just have to keep an eye on her,she was so,so good, not a job i ever antisipated, but when needs must i took action, will keep her inside for a bit, maybe take her wraped up to see her friends tomorow just for a look see,am still here, hoping to avoid the vets,it's amazing what we CAN do to help our pets, when the call comes, now i learned somat new, will be able to keep a better eye on the others.any other advice welcome,am keeping food from her for a few hours, then will offer corn, she will not have water yet.

I would feed her Lottie, if she is willing to eat. If she refuses you can offer scrambled egg.
I wouldn't put her back with the others if the prolapse keeps popping out - the other hens will peck at it and if it bleeds they won't leave her alone and that could be fatal. A couple of days apart won't hurt her and maybe enough time for it to stay in place.
In my experience hybrid chickens are more prone to prolapse than traditional breeds. You've done all that you can for now, it's probably a wait and see.....but if it keeps happening be prepared to do the deed rather than let her suffer.

I had one prolapse once...just popped it back in once cleaned up and it didn't happen again.
Good luck...she sounds like she's in a good pair of hands

Thankyou girls, have been doing more reserch on line,i am also certain she has vent gleet, she stinks,i have seen pics and read exactly, what state /syptomes she has,she is drinking water with a little cider vinegar in,eating corn, had a little yogurt and whooped it back,it was good hearing the corn being pecked at,is now in a biger container, with bedding of wood chip, seems quite alert, and a lot happier,i opened a bit of 1 corner and the head popped out for a quick look, just had another look, she is settling down for the night, and no way is she going back with the others until her issues are resolved.

Good on you Lottie....I often have the occasional bird (even pheasant) having a warm in my kitchen but I made the mistake of keeping the cockerel indoors for one night once! OMG!The house was rocking first thing in the morning

HI scarlet, she seemed better next day, then it came out again, she was so unhappy last night,i can only describe it as cried herself to sleep, this morning i expected the worst, she has had a little water, not interested in food,i think she is missing her pals, deffinaltly vent gleet,so will treat her accordingly,i think maybe the prolaps will sort it'self out once the other problem clears up,if notMMMMM,i have only had them almost 12 months.
here is a pic of her a few mins ago, looks realy sad bless her,and very quiet, keeps closeing her eyes, she gotta be tired after last night,

Well what a difference, you can all have a good laugh if you like, but,i have taken her every day,to see here friends, yesterday i put here inside for a few mins, they all came to see her,i also keep putting her to have a few steps if wanted on the patio, she still not eaten anything only drink, later on,her crop felt on the hard side, and am sure it was grit i could feel,a bit like small grains in a bean bag,i gave her some olive oil,and massarged it,but only a little water came out,she still dripping,i also squibed some baby oil into the vent, when i looked last thing, she was sound asleep head tucked under the wing,TODAY,a different hen, still dripps, but little bits of poop have happened, even had a walk around the patio, pecking at the cracks,so gave her chick crumbs and was pecking at them a little,so much more alert, took her down the inside the main pen for a few mins again, she starteded waling around, had some water and a few pecks in the egg shell and grit, even had a little ground scratch, the others were exited at seeing her,BUT 2 off them had a little peck at the bedragled under feathers,so i took her out,she did try to escape me with a bit of indignant cluck, back in her box,she jumped out,so back in with all she needs and wash basket on one half and a holy ruber door mat on the other, the head keeps coming up the neck stretched out and eyes open looking around, later on i will repeat the oils, and let her out for patio stoll again,i am so hoping i have done right by her,she is MR favourit bird,he keeps talking to her and feels for her as well,i feel so much happier.

Can you section off part of their run so that she could be in with them but not got at?

Update, sectioned a bit of for daytime only, had another look at the vent she was straining, and there it was,you could just about make out the egg,now ther was no way i could feel anything resembling an egg before, and after a feel it was,she could not pass it,was trying so hard and crying out,so a warm bath, her head floped down, she was wore out, took her out wraped up in a towel, broke the egg,and with the aid of marigolds and vaselene, got everything out,so another warm soak, and a dry of,wraped in another towel head floped over my arm,and in the longe for a few steps, then in the box,am just hoping she will be ok after a good sleep, the vent area looks so much better, and pink color, she is realy thin now,MR had tears in his eyes,i was realy supprized, see what the morning brings.

Some info here on being Egg bound. https://www.thehappychickencoop.com/egg-bound-chicken/
Don't know whether it fits the symptoms.

Thanks VC,i saw that one,it was purly on reading up about things that i realized i had to step in and do something, just had another look at her,put her on a towel for a few steps,i cannot understand what was realy her bother, only the gleet,on previouse examinations i could not feel an egg,it seemed to happen all at once about 6.30pm,even the crop feels better now,i have been giving her a daily dose off olive oil,and vasalene at the vent, and massarged very gently the crop, she does however look a real mess underneith, from the gleet leeks,am sure i did not imagine things, but i swear her eyes are biger and bright again,i just kept calm, gave her cuddles, and got on with the delivery,i will not put her back in the same space as the others in the run, untill i know she is all good and layed an egg naturally,if someone said that i would maybe have to this,i may have been put off having any,so am hoping it's a win win win, sweet dreams.
