  • Non Responsive Chicken

Just in from work and took a wander up to Coop to check on the Chickens make sure they all had enough water and food which they did, opened the nesting box to take out the eggs. Found my speckled Sussex laying on the house floor, at first I thought she was dead but then noticed she was still breathing but not responding.

Have now put her in a box and brought indoor but she seems non responsive and her breathing seems a little strained, there is also a nasty smell of poop coming from her but no signs of any problems with her, she is just laying in the box and when picked up she is just floppy but is still breathing.

What is the best course of action...? any ideas? or is there no hope? I have been told by someone on another forum who has been keeping chickens for a long while to put her out of her misery but I did not really want to do that unless of course that is the only way..

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

I would try her somewhere warm and quite, what is her diet and has been eating anything that she should!
Is there always food available ( that is mash or pellets of a good quality ) do you feed anything else? Is she old? Once a bird gets weak they can be driven off the food by the others. Was she laying and healthy just before.
