  • Morag - Scots Dumpy Pin Up Chick!

DD has been about with her camera, so I thought I'd share some photos of Morag, who loves to pose.

She's a gorgeous girl, very pragmatic and stoical, very calm. She potters about in her waddly way (because of the short legs) and constantly mutters to herself. We're lucky we still have her as she picked a fight with Jakk the Harris Hawk and came off worse, resulting in a general anaesthetic and a loads of stitches in a 5 inch gash that curled around her neck. She took it very well, and still laid an egg that day after her op! She's learn't her lesson and doesn't make a rush for the aviary the minute the door is opened any more to look for gruesome scraps!

I do! Morag is gorgeous! Not often you see them outside Scotland. I haven't got any pictures near as good of mine, but here's one of my (ex-)cockerel Wally in the snow.

If he didn't have that red comb it would be a real case of 'Where's Wally?' in the snow!

I'm sorry but that bird is definately NOT a Scots Dumpy.

                      It's clearly a Japanese Bantam.

Because SD's are endangered and rare in England, you will find it difficult to get a real SD other than in Scotland. Because their numbers are so few, some breeders have been introducing Japanese Bantams and even Pekin Bantams into the breed to increase stock levels, but unfortunately this results in birds such as yours.

If it was sold as a Scots Dumpy then I'm afraid the breeder has no idea what he's selling or breeding for that matter.

Here are some pictures of mine.

Scots Dumpy's should have big boat shaped bodies, low tails compared to other breeds, 1.5" legs and waddle from side to side as they walk.

Well, Morag came from here YOULDON WATERS Coarse Fishery Rare Breed Poultry and what's more, I am perfectly satisfied that she is a true Scots Dumpy. I also got my Marsh Daisy from Mick & Sue, and she is also much admired.

If HennyPenny thinks that Youldon are mis-selling then please take the matter directly to them. My girls are darned lovely, even if they look the wrong shape in my photos.
