  • Lumpy rippled eggs

One of my hens has layed eggs all week which are covered in ridges and are not smooth like the other hens. Does this mean anything?

How old is she? If she's recently come into lay or is getting on a bit it could be the reason. Battery and free range establishment get rid of hens when they are at the age when they lay wierd eggs but the egg is perfectly fine.

I posted some pics up a few days...or maybe weeks???...ago...search for Odd Egg.
Sounds pretty similar, lots of people said their's sometimes lay them also,so was quite reassuring.
I think at the time with mine they were skipping the grit!(had switched to pellets, but when they have mash I mix it in & they can't leave it!).Must say, since they've been eating the grit more again we don't seem to be getting them,so could be linked???

She is only 1 year old. I wondered if she is calcium deficient. she is regrowing feathers which have been pecked out by the other hen, so maybe this is using her calcium stores up more than normal. I will take a look at the odd egg post and let you know if its the same as mine in a minute Ta

Yes they are similar to your pic. Interested to read the suggestion about them being from fat hens. I have been trying to plump mine up as they are slight! I think i will just carry on as normal, when i eat one i will check the thickness of the shell. If it is thin then maybe it is linked to her feather growing burst using up her calcium and i will try and boost it a bit. Thanks 4 advice J

Constantly ridged eggs are supposed to be signs of a hen having had infectious bronchitis, which apparently can affect the oviduct, thereby producing the odd shaped eggs. But if she previously laid ok eggs and you haven't noticed her to be off colour in any way, it may just be a dietary related blip.

Absolutely nowt to worry about my lot (32) have laid odd eggs since day one (varying from November, December and April additions) I get the odd wrinkly every few days and is not down to one girly it's just that they are over a year and can do this as a matter of course. Those eggs under ab'normal' conditions would have just gone on to produce ready meals
