another hen has died on me,found her in the nest, she not layed eggs for a while,i just thought she was having a rest,i wonder if it's on account of them being a hybrid, from what i was reading, they have all been treated the same, the other 3 are in fine fettle,i am sad,but nature has her ways, and life goes on,i would not have anymore hybrids, the 3 left give us plent of eggs to go at ,
Another nutter ,wife, mother, nan and nanan, love my growing places, seed collection and sharing, also one of these

    Sorry Lottie.

Hybrids usually live for several years - they're what I have from choice now - the rescue ones. My 3 haven't laid for weeks now = don't blame them in this cold weather!

Oh I'm sorry LD it's always sad to lose a chicken. I used to have them but haven't anymore (I miss them!)

Yes hybrids are egg laying machines and wear out quickly. I moved away from hybrids onto breeds, but they have not been laying for ages - so 9 hens to keep! I think I might get a few hybrids next time one of mine goes broody just to fill that gap, although we freeze surplus eggs in the summer which are perfectly fine so long as you don't want a boiled egg!

Hybrids do continue to lay when the days get shorter. If you go down pure breeds, you need a summer hatching to see you through the winter.
