  • I won the BIG battle!

I always thought you needed a cock to get eggs, but 2 weeks ago I was enlightened to the truth... and ever since have been on the warpath to get a few chooks.

    1) I managed to get a run sorted, with much defiance from OH... but got there in the end.
    2) OH finally decided that I could have 4, instead of the original 3 I had planned on.
    3) Picked up the girl's a couple of hours ago... and........
    4) OH says, we need a bigger run, cos he wants more!!!!

    Yay, I won

Pics coming soon, gonna let them settle in first.

I dunno if i'm going mad or not... but I can't help but keep checking on them! lol

If it weren't for the OH "keep of the grass" attitude, i'd be sitting beside the run with a flask and a brolly.
We both stood out there when we got them home, brolly in hand... wondering who was gonna venture out 1st. No-one was the answer, but it was fun to sit and watch them wandering around insdie the house.

I really do feel like a mother hen right now.

Let's see if I can do this right...

Fingers crossed that worked... but I got a surprise this morning too!
They had given me 3 eggs this morning, I don't think the one in the corner is too happy. Very fretful, so am guessing it was her that hadn't laid.

However the single one, who slept on her own all night (did worry about her) was quite content and laid the largest egg out of the group. Bless her.

Hi sheena the hens look great I use wood shavings at bedding now , (I have tryed loads and found it the best for me) it looks alittle bit bigger then your bedding but its hard to tell in the photos , Its only my view but i think you should add more shavings in there about 3 to 4 inches ,the newspapers on top like that will turn rancid very fast

I gave up on newspapers after two attempts - disaster, both on the tidiness front, and the smell - yeuch! I just use shavings. I do wish that I had gloss-painted all the inside of the shed/coop, instead of just the droppings boards. As it would have made mucking-out so much easier. Chicken poo can stick like superglue and how on earth do they get it three feet up the door???

Well the home is an old rabbit hutch, hence the mess up the back but has been disenfected and jayes fluid after that! Used that much to clean it, left it 3 days before putting hen's in.
I had put a good layer of shavings in, on top of the newspaper. The girl's had scratched around and the paper had come to the surface. I only put the paper on the bottom to make for easier cleaning, but that seems to have gone to pot. Not gonna bother with the paper again!

But they sure have been good today, had loads of fun putting them back in their house, they weren't too happy about it and wanted to carry on gorging on food.

But all in all a good day for them.. and for me. Only spent around 4-5 hours watching them in total today. So much so, that I completely forgot to feed my own kid's. lol
