  • Free range and battery hens need homes -please help

    Hi everyone,

At the moment Little Hen Rescue is in a bit of a hole. Jo has been offered some free range hens in a couple of weeks, but it's hard to find homes for them as people seem to want the ex-battery hens more.

She has also been offered up to 4000 battery hens at the end of December. At the moment there are about 2500 homes on the waiting list, but we still need more people!

If you would like any hens please get in contact by e-mailing littlehenrescue@aol.com calling Jo on 07717757596. You can also visit the website Home.

Please find some space for these deserving hens, we really don't want them to go to slaughter!

    Thanks, Anna

          Oh Bum!

It's only an hour and a bit away... and I've just bought a Shed, so my girls will have more room...and I've already got another length of electric chicken mesh...and if they're free-rangers they'll have feathers, so they could go in Dad's paddock...

          Oh Bum!

          They'll kill me...

Go for it, it sounds as though we are the same sort of distance away from Norwich and I'm seriously considering a few more girls as a Christmas present to myself!!

I'm only about an hour and a half away and would love some more but worry about introducing new girls to mine and possible bullying and probs etc...

                  Hi,
There will always be a bit of a scuffle when introducing new birds to an established flock, butthere are things you can do to help the process along!
I have my 2 new girls in a small arc within my main run. They will stay in there until the resident hens stop sizing them up theough the wire. I am letting them all out together first thing and then putting them in the arc while I'm at work as no one is there to intervene if things got nasty.
I can already see a difference in their behaviour in just 5 days and hopefully by next week they will all be together!
The worst culprit is actually one of mybantams who is about a quarter of the siz of the new girls, why they don't stand up to her I don't know! But no blood has been shed and I know they will settle down in time.
I hope you do decide to get some more, they are lovely girls!
                  Anna

We don't have a date at the moment for the rehoming days, but I think we will have quite a few 'left over'. Jo is in the lucky position of having a stables, so if they don't get rehomed straight away she keeps them until they do.
Would you be able to meet me in Tideswell? It would be on the 22nd or 23rd? So I would need to know bythe weekend before Xmas.
Jo still hasn't made a decision about the free rangers yet as the farmer won't tell us if it's 2000 or 4000 ex-batts!

actually i probably could meet you in tideswell, cos sons friend has a car, and he won't mind driving there, as long as we can do it after work, (hopes they'll be ok cooped up till evening??) i'll have to have a word with him ....... as long as it's not 3 foot deep in snow lol ...... does another little dance, and panics a bit more about getting the house ready.

Haha! Sorry, but driving an extra hour after being in the car for a minimum of 4 hours, doesn't really appeal!
Keep me posted on how many you want!
