  • Fox proof run - Advice required

    Hello everyone!

My OH and I will be collecting our first batch of ex bats at the end of the months. After reading some horror stories on various forums, we have decided to keep our girls in a secure covered run.

But...this won't just be any run; this will be the Fort Knox of chicken runs! But I would greatly appreciate advice from all of you knowledgeable grapes

We have a fox problem in the area and have had to chase a fox from the kitchen twice in the last three months in the middle of the afternoon! I don't want to resort to any drastic measures and feel that as the girls have never been outdoors before, they will appreciate an enclosed run greatly.

After lifting a large patio, I find myself with copious amounts of heavy slabs. I have used these vertically to create some raised beds (half sunk into sand). As I plan to have a permanent run, I have been advised to slab the interior of the run and cover it with gravel or Hemcore for the girls to scratch about in. This will also enable me to hose down the area for cleaning. I intend to use the remainder of the slabs in a similar style to the raised beds around the perimeter of the run to prevent foxes and badgers trying to dig in for a free meal! So that’s that...

All I need to do now is find some reputable supplier who isn’t too expensive and has some good, strong wire mesh that I can attach to my wooden frame... need advice here as the world of mesh, gauges, hole size etc is giving me a headache!! Girls come in ten days so need advice soon!

    Thanks everyone!

hi, about the mesh i am too making my fox proof run and i have bought weld mesh off eBay. The mesh is good quality and it was cheap compared to other shops. got my mesh for 25 quid for 30 meters. im using size 1 inch by 1 inch.
    hope this helps.

Weld mesh is good, really strong and I read somewhere that determined foxes can chew through chicken wire if they are that desperate for a free chook dinner!

Foxes in kitchen - wow they are really bold....or really hungry

Hill's of Devon are really good price-wise for weld mesh. The stuff I got was cheaper from them than ebay!

          Thanks everyone!

I have managed to get myself a huge roll of 2"x2" 1.6 gauge (heavy duty) weld mesh from Hills of Devon... I have 30 meters coming so I'm planning on double wiring it to make the mesh size a little smaller. Last night my OH and I decided on a new run plan, which will be a little smaller than originally planned, so I might be able to triple wire it!

Mr Worm, can you send me the link to your purchase, that sounds like a bargain! I spent £43:00!!

As we planned the run, we took in a stunning sunset over the field next to the house...but we weren't the only ones enjoying the sun! A beautiful family of fox cubs were playing and chasing rabbits. I just hope they don't get bored with the taste of rabbit too soon!

          Pictures will follow soon!

Don't forget the roof. Foxes can climb (and weldmesh, unless the holes are too small for a paw, is nice and easy to scramble up).
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

              Thanks Hilary!

The run will only be around 1m high, with a liftable roof for cleaning and petting We can't take any chances; only yesterday I was covered in feathers as a large bird of prey (not sure which species) tried to kill a large wood pidgeon in the tree at the bottom of my garden. Poor thing managed to get away with a broken wing...

Got the foundations down and now just trying to locate my wire mesh with no help from Hills of Devon...

Coop arrived yesterday so will be a busy weekend of building!

Any recommendations for food and bedding supplies would be greatly appreaciated... finding prices vary greatly.

              8 days to go...

Best places to try are farm shops, they tend to be reasonably priced.

I've found if i'm prepared to travel a 25 mile round trip I can pay £6 a bag of food, but my nearest food store is pets at home and they charge £10 a bag.

A localish farm shop is a better option as they do alot of chooky items and I always end up buying other bits anyway and they charge just over £7.

Other than that, you can always buy online from various places and have it delivered to save you the trek. All depends on how much you buy.
