  • First egg?

Sorry if I'm raising a recently discussed subject, I'm sure there's a thread on here about weird eggs, but I can't find it.

This afternoon I found a half-size egg. It was laying in a pile of poo, outside in the run. It is medium brown in colour, like my brown Hens lay, not dark like a Marans should be. So, is it a freak small egg from one of the ex-batts/rangers, or a practice egg from one of the Marans, who aren't due to lay until mid-May? One of the Coppers has developed a comb and wattles in the last week, but I'm not sure if she's crouching, as I can't get near her yet.

DH broke it open, and the yolk was perfectly formed, but creamy-white in colour. The white was small and very sturdy, but with a lot of what looked like water with it. I can't post a picture, as I'm on a borrowed lappy with no card-reader and can't find my camera cable.

Anyway, I'll wait to see what tomorrow brings! Meanwhile, comments welcome.

Ooooeer, I sometimes get the odd small egg, but I like them 'cause they normally come with a big yolk and less white, so I nab those to enjoy myself, Mummy's treat....

Does sound like a practice egg in theory (pun unintended) but then I've no experience of any chook younger than a year and a bit YET

Well how strange!!!!...cos I was about to post a comment on a 10g egg one of ours laid yesterday!!!!

My 4 gals are laying between 35-45 g now and as they are bantams won't get any bigger.

Now- the thing is , yesterday we collected 3 eggs of 'normal' size..plus this tiny one laid with the rest.
Soooo..I'm wondering if this is a tiny one from my regular layers( and that would be the first tiny one they've laid)

orrrrr...could it be the first egg laid by one of my chicks who would be 12 weeks on Monday...seems VERY young for a first egg doesn't it??

I think I'll blow it- I'm expecting no yolk..but it'll be interesting to see!

We had small egg last year, someone told me it was the " bolt egg " and not to eat it, basically the first egg, preparing the exit passage for future laying. I'm probably wrong though..... ( still didn't eat the egg!!! )

Well...I've just huffed and puffed and given myself jaw-ache..and made the holes larger...and then puffed some more

I'd forgotten how hard it can be to start an egg blowing thingy...bit like blowing up a baloon!

Anyway..the result was pretty thick egg white with a tiny bright orange/yellow yolk the size of a tiny petit pois

Wonder if there will be a few more like that???

Here you go...but first you need to sratch a small hole at the top, and a larger one at the bottom with a needle or something very sharp- then poke the nedle inside the egg to break the yolk membrane..and then...off you go!!!

I've still got the very tiny egg that one of mine laid (over a month ago!) and as it's so old I don't fancy blowing it. I wonder if emptying it with a syringe and needle would work? Can't see why not really
