    Default cockerel

Having gained some more space for my chooks , im wanting to get a cockerel
for one purpose only and that is to feed up and have it for xmas .

What kind of cockerel is a good one for eating and also it will be free range but what is the best feed to fatten him up ready for the table?

Also can you have more than one in the same area or will they fight ?

    Cheers roadkill

ok - a good table bird would be either a maran cockerel, light sussex, dorking or indian game as these have all been bred for the table. The cockerels will be fine together if they have grown up together from chicks at a few days old, otherwise they will fight when put together.

as for fattening, feed on growers and finisher pellets, with added corn to add a layer of fat, dont let them range too far or they will walk off the fat you are trying to keep on them!

I've got some Croad Langshan boys if you'd like one They're going to be HUGE birds, not quite as big as Jersey Giant, but getting on that way. As long as they're not crowing I don't mind growing them on and I only want to keep 1 to swap with someone else (don't really want to in-breed the Croads)
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there
