  • Cock-fighting Hens!

Well, I was disgusted at their behaviour. I let the four 'quarantined' Chooks back in with the rest this afternoon. They were just separated (by mesh) as I had to throw their eggs away for four weeks after their jabs.

Anyway, Nosey Rosie led the other three back into the main run, and all was well. Whilst I filled up a feed hopper I heard a noise, turned round, and Rosie and Ginger were 'at it' like two Cockerels - neck feathers all fluffed out, feet forward, jumping at each other and pecking . I separated them (with one foot!) and they were fine for a while, but they started again later when I was out of the run. I guess they'll settle down again, but it was a surprise to see - they looked quite serious !

I sat and watched them for a while, and noticed that both Rosie and Ginger have spurs - not one of the others has!

No, they're ex-batts! Ginger is the pretty one, but a little scatty (a bit like the Marans!) and (Nosy) Rosie was the first out of the coop, first on my lap, in fact first into everything, hence her name - she named herself!

They're a lot calmer this morning, so maybe they've had time to sleep on it!

Hi, i've had 1st lot of ex-batts for 2 years now, 2nd lot nearly a year.
First lot are very docile friendly to everybody, 2nd lot are crazy fighting each other picking on claude (cockeral) and the dog! Sometimes even me at bedtime,
i guess it could be what their live was like before we rescued them?

Good point BH. Mine obviously didn't get too badly treated, as they are very friendly and usually laid back as anything. Anyway, I just went out and gave them a cup of corn, and all was fine - normality resumed - whatever that is!

Nicos, they are docile...but they do have a spurs..!

Mine rarely fight...but that's because the faverolles are sooo laid back they're horizontal!! The Marans sometimes have a wee scrap, but it's mild...because Mavis is great at running away!
