If you are in a built up area you will need to ask your council! If they don't allow them on the allotments they may not allow them in your back garden, but it is well worth while asking! Of course you won't be keeping cockerels so no breeding for you!

it depends on what zoning your area is in, if its high density residencial you need permission, however a friend of our kept chickens ducks rabbits turkeys goats and pigs on his and the council were never the wiser, how understanding are your neighbours
      Yo an' Bob
      Walk lightly on the earth
      take only what you need
      give all you can
and your produce will be bountifull
