Hi snadger me and the wife keep chickens, we've got six, sorry no photo's at the moment but i'll look at taking some. we got a second hand 6x4 garden shed and put some nest boxes and perches inside and built a run outside using recycled timber and 1" chicken wire. they're fed on layers pellets and have the run of the garden a couple of times a week. you can't beat the taste of your own fresh eggs.

      Hi Snadger

I spent some happy hours surfing the internet and looking up the poultry equipment suppliers who advertise in GYO magazine. The prices are quite scary though and I bought plans to build my own ark on ebay. Now I just have to convince OH that if we move it will not be difficult to find the chooks a new home - and then persuade him to build the ark!!

Good luck and enjoy the fresh eggs - you will never go back to shop-bought - I haven't really enjoyed a boiled egg since my family stopped keeping hens nearly 20 years ago.
      Happy Gardening,
      Shirley

These are two of my girls, my OH built a lovely shed for them quite cheaply. It's big enough for 6 -8 birds and cost around £120. I'll try and take some pics of it and post those too. It's a more square design, with a sloping roof, which in some ways is better than an ark because there's no wasted space.

My Nan had chooks when I was little, I used to love going egg hunting when I stayed with them, just wish we were able to keep some here, problem is we arent allowed any on our plot, and we dont really have the room where they would be safe (plus I dont think the neighbours would like it) Perhaps when we win the lottery and move out to the wilds we will be able to have some then!

Congratulations Yo, you definitely posted a pic. Lovely chook. Could be rear of the year. I would think Felicity Kendall would be out of the running by now.

                      Thanks for trying yoandbob!

Caption should read.."Talk to the butt!"Lol

Thanks also birdie wife, your chooks look great and seem to be in an environment I personally associate with 'free range'.

I am a bit worried myself about restricting them to a wood chippings floor, even though its still technically free range.

                      I am inspired!

Birdie Wife, your chooks are beautiful, what breed are they? Do they have little black specks on the feathers or was that just the way the photo came out? They look so pleased with themselves in chook paradise. Wish my hen run looked that good, my chooks have a 20'x30' run and have managed to turn it to mud in a matter of months. Have to let them out in the garden to rest the ground when I'm not working but then they just go n eat my veggies, grr. Hope the ground will recover in the spring, till then its wellies.

There are some good pictures of chicken runs/arks on Forsham Cottage Arks. I plan to have 3 04 four chooks in the spring and will pinch the ideas and then make a run to suit me and the garden. Best of luck
