  • A chick!!

Went down to say good morning to my broody and there peeping out from under her was a tiny fluffy head!

Raced in to tell the kids but by the time they'd come out it was safely hidden again. No idea how many may have hatched overnight but I hadnt expected any today as in the first few days she abandoned them more than a few times so I'd been counting as Monday being day 21!

It must be a banty though because the CL eggs went under her a day or so later

They are lemon millefleur sablepoot booted bantams. If they are girls we'll call them popcorn and nugget - if they are boys they'll be going to a new home!

..and this is what they may look like at about 3 months old - this is Rolf (listening to himself singing 'tie me kangaroo down sport' on the radio!) He has yet to grow into his feathers -they are a little large for him at his final moult into his grown-up plumage.

He's gorgeous, I love his feet!

At what age did it become obvious he was a boy Jess?

Sometime between 4 and 8 weeks. For some reason I've no pics of 5,6 or 7 weeks old. I think you can see the difference in the combs in this pic here, two boys, one gel.....sorry to be so vague!........

Thanks Jess, so I need to be looking at combs then. Im sure I'll be posting photos asking what you think when the time comes!

Nerves are setting in now, broody abandoned the cream legbar eggs on Sunday afternoon - she would choose to do it while we were out so they were left for around 2 hours. Soon as we got back I put them straight in the inccy (which had been on since Friday just in case) in the hope that they might still be viable - 21 days tomorrow, wondering what the chances of them hatching will be....
