  • Wild Garlic Bulbs

Hi, Does anybody know if i remove all the foliage & stem from wild garlic and just plant the bulbs will they grow back next year or just rot?

The reason I ask is i'm wanting to send some plants from my woodland garden to some friends but they're way to big to post as is.

So If I dig them and cut everything off to soil level (I can use the leaves and flowers for cooking). Will the remaining bulb and root system survive once planted and come back next year for my friends?

    Thanks

Never tried it, but I reckon they will - pretty tough.

Since the leaves feed the bulbs, I'd cut off the flowers now, leave the leaves to die back naturally and then share them with your friends.

Would love some wild garlic, but no one sells it and as VC says, illegal to dig in the wild

I bought wild garlic bulbs from somewhere last year (I think it was Marshall seeds). They call it bear garlic so maybe why it doesn't show up in searches.

                Found the link:

Wild Garlic is also called Ramsons. Sold as spring bulbs in places.

It's illegal to dig anything up anywhere without the land owners permission. Otherwise it is simply theft. Even invasive species like the three cornered leek.

They grow wild on the roadside here by me, literally thousands getting crushed by passing trucks going to the factory. I rescued a crushed little one from certain death it's now in my back garden on it's second year. Following that success I'll try to dig up any crushed ones that spring up too close on the road this year. I don't see anyone objecting to me clearing the road. (Hopefully).

In my view the law is there to protect plants like wild orchids from people digging those and selling them or whatever, which is quite right and a good thing - but wild garlic plants as you say number in the 1000,000's in the local woods and a few taken to someone's garden is neither here nor there in practical terms.
