  • What to sow where

I am about to start my indoor sowing with some of the seeds I have been donated by some very generous grapes. I am panicking because it is nearly March (where did February go?) and I haven't started yet, and I know lots of you started sowing in January.

I have now managed to collect 3 small heated propogators and 1 unheated one, some full size, half size and quarter size seed trays to go in them, and some full size tray inserts with individual modules, one pack of rootrainers, about 100 loo-roll and kitchen-roll tubes and hundreds of little pots. (Oh, and my draughty unheated greenhouse). I've been reading the 'what to sow this month' thread but am still a bit confused about the best conditions for each type of seed.

The seeds I am planning to sow now are:-
    Broad beans
    Peas
    Tomatoes
    Chilli peppers
    Onions
    Leeks
    Cauli
    Spring onions

Can anyone please advise me which seeds I should plant where to give them the best chance of survival? Do you just sow a few of each now, then repeat the sowings again in a few weeks time?

Also, how does multiple sowing work? Does this just mean that you don't thin them out - do you separate them when you plant them out or just plant them in clumps?

Is there anything else I should be sowing indoors now?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance!

I just thought I'd let you know that you aren't the only one who has yet to plant anything - the only thing I have done so far is set some chilli seeds on damp kitchen roll to germinate (3 have so far). I am going to start sowing this week though, and then from next week things really rev up, as the season begins proper. I'm going to do broad beans and leeks, some cabbage, and spring onions either today or tomorrow, and go on from there. I haven't a greenhouse, so all these will be in trays or my newly acquired rootrainers, and on windowsills.

Whatever you do, don't panic - the stuff we 'slightly later starters' put in will just be a few weeks later to harvest, and there is still loads of time. Relax

Btw, I also want to apologise to you, as I was a doubter on the thread about your seeds, and feel badly now - so sorry Curly Kale . Have fun with your planting, and here's to a good growing season .

Toms and chilis need to be indoors and stay warm, they can't go out until after the frost.

Everything else I would sow indoors then move out to my greenhouse (plastic) at the first signs of germination to grow.

Depends what it is, and how many you want.

In general, never sow the whole packet (in case they all fail, and anyway you don't need 100 cabbages)

I haven't started sowing yet. Been too wet and cold. OK, you can germinate indoors, but once the seeds have germinated you need somewhere to put them. Must start soon though.
