  • What have you got growing / or still to sow?

    Hello,

At the moment i have the following growing in my veg patch, i thought it would be nice to see what everyone else has already growing either in the patch or in the greenhouse, and what you still need to sow so we can compare notes (especially us newbies).

    Veg patch:
Onions (overwintered sets, some usable size already)
Silverskin onions (from seed, not yet bulbing)
    Garlic (overwintered)
Yellow Chard (started using in last couple of weeks)
Golden Beetroot (growing slowly, module sown & planted out a month ago)
    Purple Beetroot (direct sown)
Chinese Kale (planted 2-3 weeks ago)
Green & Purple sprouting Broccolli (planted 2-3 weeks ago)
Red Cabbage (planted 2-3 weeks ago)
    Swede (direct sown)
    Turnip purple top (direct sown)
French beans (module sown, planted out 1 week ago)
Sweetcorn (module sown, planted out 1 week ago)
Courgette (GH sown, planted out 1 week ago)
Squash sunburst, (GH sown, planted out 1 week ago)
Peas (module sown, doing quite poorly although are in flower)
Broadbeans (module sown in winter, just starting to eat)
Potatoes (foliage starting to droop, hopefully ready soon)
    Carrots (direct sown)
    Turnips golden (direct sown)
Cucumber (planted out yesterday in large pot)
Pumpkin (planted out yesterday in large pot)

Fruit: (mostly in 1st or 2nd year)
Gooseberries (got some kind of white mould on the few berries there are)
Red / Black currants (small amount fruit, nopt ripe yet)
Autumn Raspberries (about a foot tall, bit yellow looking)
    Rhubarb (1st year proper harvesting)
3 Apple trees (no blossom this year - 2 year planted)
Blueberries (pleasing this year (2nd) fruit starting to form)
Cranberries (just starting to flower but not many)
Plum tree (about 3 tiny fruits forming, 1st year)

    Greenhouse:
Bush tomatoes (in baskets, masses of flowers, fruit starting to form)
Cordon tomatoes (about 2ft tall, 1st flowers forming)
    Mini tomatoes (1st fruits forming)
Peppers & Chilli (still only about 20cms tall)
    Melon (still very small)
Peas (flowering & 1st pods forming)
Carrots (coming on, tiny carrots still)

Not quite sure what i still need to sow except dwarf french beans as zero germination so far, and more sweetcorn as also poor germination.

So how are you guys doing?
    Jane,
    keen but (slightly less) clueless

Mine. Only had a garden since Feb 09 so am new but things have gone surprising well!

All the below are from seeds.

      Veg:
Tomatoes - x20 all looking very good. 15 are in a greenhouse, the others are outdoors on the patio.
Beans - loads of French Runners, Dwarf and Mange Tout, the latter beginning to flower.
Lettuce - too many to mention but all growing fantastic.
Aubergine - x2 about a foot high and looking very nice indeed!
Elephant Garlic - x6. Not sure when this is ready to dig up. Any ideas anyone? They are about a foot in height.
Spinach - about 7cms in height now and looking good. Any advice on spinach anyone?
Carrots - loads of carrots about 3 weeks from harvesting.
Sprouts - x7 plants all looking good!
      Broccoli - looking good!
Courgettes - x5 plants all looking good!
Cucumber - after several deaths one is finally flourishing under glass
Chillies and peppers - Over 30 of them in 5 litre pots! So many varieties!
Salad Onions - lots of patience required here! They take ages!
Herb Garden - Dill, Coriander, Thyme, Mint, Apple Mint and Rosemary.

Special mention to the wife for being cool with all the pots and propagators all over the house since Feb!

At the lottie I have the following:

Fruit - 2 eating apple trees, 1 cooking tree, 1 pear (the other seems to have died!), strawberries, loads of raspberries, black currant, white currant, blue berries, red currants, red and green gooseberries.

Veg (direct sown) - carrots (orange and purple), parsnips, radish (loads!), beetroot (normal red and that stripey stuff), shallots, red onions, white onions, garlic, borlotti beans, peas, mange tout, early pots, second early and 3 different types of main crop, swede and turnips.

Veg (raised at home and planted out) - onions from seed, tomatoes, chillies, courgettes, chard, runner beans, French beans, broad beans and early peas & mange tout.

At home I have the following growing on to be planted at the allotment when ready:

More courgettes, various squashes and pumpkins, leeks, more tomatoes, tomatillos, more French beans, sweet corn, winter cabbage, purple sprouting brocolli, calabrese, sprouts, winter cauliflower, kale, red cabbage, spinach, spinach beet and probably something else I've forgotten. All this before I've even thought about things like spring cabbage etc!

In addition am growing more toms at home as well as aubergines, sweet peppers, more chillies, cucumbers, gherkins as well as herbs and salad stuffs.

Am glad I've listed this lot out as it makes me realise the variety of stuff I'll hopefully have to eat later in the year.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Elephant Garlic - x6. Not sure when this is ready to dig up. Any ideas anyone? They are about a foot in height.

Remove flower heads as soon as they appear, about mid August leaves will start to yellow and wilt - then its time to dig them up and hope it doesnt rain like last year so sun drying is possible. Once dried I cut stalks at about 3" and store, will keep up to 3 years if properly dried. Select best outer cloves for replanting in October.

I thought I had planted lots but then I read some of the above posts! Wow! Wonder if I can use that excuse to jam more pots into the back garden... Some interesting sounding varieties too to try next year methinks!

                      Raised Bed 1 (1m x 1m)
Climbing beans (7 Goldfield), dwarf beans (7 Purple Teepee), climbing bean (7 Blauhilde), garlic (10 mystery variety, Spring planting), lettuces (various, six rather cramped ones - soon to have a gap when these get eaten!), celery (three), swiss chard (8 small rainbow plants, won't be letting these get too big)

                      Raised Bed 2 (1m x 1m)
Garlic (36 Sultrop?, spring variety), flat leaved parsley (third of the bed), broccoli (5 sets of seeds just planted, nice free Raab )

                      Raised Bed 3 (1m x 1m)
Garlic (36 mystery variety, Spring planting), onions (24 from sets, unsure which ones but Spring planting), curly leaved parsley, sweetcorn (7 Baby Corn, planted two weeks ago)

                      Greenhouse (6x4)
Aubergines (8 plants, mix of Calliope and Enorma and one mystery one), chillies (around 30 chillies, a mix of Aji Limo (?), Aji Crystal, two sets of crosses - mine and my brother's and a few more random varieties), lemongrass (killed my seed ones overwinter so got two pots of rooted supermarket ones going instead now), nasturtiums (two pots), marigolds (12 plants, bought from random plant sale so no clue which ones), basil (Lime, Red, Genovese - trough of each and a mixed one, now indoors), tarragon (Russian I think, one trough), tomatoes (3 plants, Tumbling Tom Red), coriander (one trough)

                      Fruit Pots
Bilberries (6 pots), blackcurrants (3 pots, Ebony), strawberries (giant planter of them, around 36 plants of 8 different varieties, none of which I can remember without looking *eyes the rain*), raspberries (five canes in a shallow raised bed 0.5m x 1.0m, which may well go hugely wrong! Brice.), blackberries (one plant in tiny shallow bit of the above raised bed 0.5m x 0.5m. Loch Ness. Possibly also doomed, or to be moved into a deeper bed next year), more strawberries (four from seed so far in a washing up bowl - Temptation and Mignonette)

                      Veggie Pots
Spring Onions (one bowl of White Lisbon), peas (three pots of Hurst), petit pois (two pots of Sugar Bon), mixed random climbing beans and dwarf beans (two pots), baby leeks (one bowl), baby carrots (two bowls), various lettuce (small bowl), rainbow chard (small trough), two chillies slightly undercover (Cayenne), three tomatoes slightly undercover (Tumbling Tom Red), squashes (five pots of Hasta la Pasta, Scallop and Jack be Little), twenty odd pots of leftover onion sets just jammed in anywhere, potatoes (three planters each of Charlotte, Red Duke of York and Accent)

                      Herb Pots
Mint (one pot each of: ginger, orange, apple, pineapple, spearmint, chocolate stemmed (?), corsican plus another one from seed - generic), lemon verbena, lemon balm, dill, chives

                      Front garden
Lavenders (several types), thymes (various, inc a gorgeous lemon thyme), wild strawberries, lemon balm, oregano, parsley, sage (various), pennyroyal, mints (various), chives (normal and garlic), russian tarragon, two chillies (outdoor ones as they got hit hard with aphids early in the season), curry plants (dwarf and normal)

The watering is slowly doing me in! Also I fully expect to lose the celery (it was bought cheap and pot bound so could be touch and go as it hasn't settled in too happily) and possibly the parsley (a rough transplant today from its pot to the raised beds).

Not a great deal compared to the other but considering I grew only tomatores, beans and courgette in my back garden I am pleased . But need to seriously start thinking of the next set of veggies to get ready for post summer.
