A mate of mine has 6 rabbits which obviously generate an awful lot of straw/poo waste which she just throws away-its about a bin bag a week. I thought i could have this for my lottie but could i put this straight on and dig it in or does it have to be matured like horse poo?

I agree you need to rot it down first, if you put it in the soil the straw will take nitrogen out of the soil to help it rot down which is the last thing you want. To speed up the composting process make sure it's damp when added to the compost heap, also add in green material such as grass cuttings and vegetable peelings.Comment

Yes, we allow ours to rot down first too, but rabbit poo contains lots of lovely bacteria that speed up the progress of the whole heap so is definitely something worth having. It can save you a fortune as you don't have to use those compost accelerator preparations.Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

i'm composting some, and also trying some as a soil warmer under cardboard and soil dunno if it will be any good but trying where my potatoes are going... another month or so till spuds go in yet.Comment

According to my Geoff Hamilton book, rabbit manure is ideal, but does need to be composted first - either by adding to a compost bin or by stacking in a pile like you would horse manure.
I have one rabbit & use the straw/poo mix from mine in the compost bin.

Its the best manure you can get !! if you dont want to compost it try trenching it, i do this with guinea pig poo as i have 90 an they produce approx 10 sacks a week !! is great in bean trenches and the rest i compost and give to other plot holders.Comment

And ask her to put a bucket with some water in it under the rabbits' hutch. That rabbit tea is good for watering plants.Comment

I read recently that bunny poo is the only manure which can be used fresh. Apparently it's the straw/shavings which take the time to compost down.
